Life upon the wicked Stage


Terrence O'Brien is a native of Edna, Kansas, and an alumni of Pittsburg State University, Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, and the University of Houston.

After college, O'Brien continued vocal study in New York with Placido Domingo's teacher, Franco Iglesias, and with vocal coaches William Hicks (Metropolitan Opera), Martha Gerhardt (New York City Opera), and solo repetitor Thomas Lausmann (Bayreuth Festival, Vienna State Opera).

Terrence has performed over 60 roles in opera, theater, and musical theater throughout the USA, Europe and Russia, including the Spoleto Festival, Italy, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Tulsa Opera, OperaDelaware and the American Music Theater Festival. Early roles included Alfredo in LA TRAVIATA, Rodolfo in LA BOHEME and Tamino in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, and as his voice developed, his repertoire expanded to roles including Manrico in IL TROVATORE, Don Jose in CARMEN and the title role in Offenbach's LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN. He was a finalist in the Greater Buffalo International Vocal Competition and winner of the 2004 Venice International Vocal Competition in Venice, Italy.

 

MUSICAL THEATER  (separate heading above)

Equally versed in musical theater, O'Brien's numerous roles have included Tony in West Side Story, Billy Flynn in Chicago, and Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd, to name a few. O'Brien had the honor of creating the role of Young Ben Franklin in the world premier of the Ricky Ian Gordon musical, States of Independence.

 

COUNTRY GENTZ (separate heading above)

The 4th of July, 2014 marked the premier performance of Country Gentz, a Pop/Rock/Country/Rockabilly band led by O'Brien, which features many of his original songs. O'Brien continues to perform in selected concerts in Europe and the US, with a spectrum of musical offerings including opera, operetta, showtunes, pop, cabaret, and cool jazz.
